The Wingfeather Saga tells the story of the Igiby family and especially their three children: Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli. Readers become non-readers, non-readers turn to readers. Even when it seems Leeli raughable, really laughable, to do so. At first I tried to keep up, tried to preview every book they read. Andrew Peterson: Thank you. Andrew Peterson: They make these small decisions, and then for the next five episodes you see the outflow of the sin that created this situation. All of this ridiculousness. There is no running away from home in this book. But there were some good things about it, but the bad guy, Kenneth Branaghs character, at no point did I ever believe their reasons for why he was so bad, and at no point did I ever understand why he wanted to destroy the world. Can a Christian read and enjoy a fantasy series like Wingfeather? Do you want the next best thing after the Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia? If our kids came to us and said, I need to talk to you about something, we dont go, Oh, Im paying the bills right now. That feels like a cardboard thing to me. Andrew Peterson: And so, my imagination is often where, if I go dark, its because I begin to believe something about myself that isnt true, and its because Im listening to the voice of the enemy and not the voice of the Father. The Fangs walked about like humans, and in fact they looked exactly like humans, except for the greenish scales that covered their bodies and the lizard-like snout and the two long, venomous fangs that jutted downward from their snarling mouths. And I didnt do it perfectly. But is Wingfeather a Christian book? Do you like ancient and over-looked treasures? The theological core is Christian. The footnotes intrude, in a good way, into the narrative and tell of a bigger world out there. He is stuck in this backward village called Glipwood. Are you a concerned Christian who asks whether fantasy books is right for Christians? But today that influence is just lost on us because people dont have that level of rootedness in shared texts. Janner's death is so moving but so, so, SO devastating. Andrew Peterson: So I think thats what I was going for; was to have Podo and Nia be these characters that actually were present, and were in as much danger as the kids were. There you go. But then I realized, This is not the end of the story. It couldnt be the end of the story; there were too many practical considerations. I also noticed that name changes seem to be happening at really pivotal moments in a characters life. Im reading aloud the Wingfeather Saga to my kids (again). It can describe the world, how it functions and how to subdue it. Its not just a generalized pride or ambition. It was just two weeks after they had returned to Anniera. Arriving back at the ruins of Castle Rysen, the family again gave thanks to the Maker for restoring Janner. i love those books so much. Andrew Peterson: What the voice of the enemy is doing in my head in those moments is hes naming me. @gretald You should read the alternate ending zoe wrote. Janner was emptied of life and fell to the ground. *scowls*. With Bonifer, though, theres actually this backstory that helps us understand his transformation. Andrew Peterson: I think it comes down to the fact that I wanted the world to feel real, and therefore, I wanted the characters to feel real. Should We? I actually (*ahem*) read ahead by accident (its a bad habit) and found out that Janner died, but even knowing beforehand didnt prepare me for it. Why? I think Philip Pullman said it. And Im sure scripture was part of that, because they both grew up in a Christian culture. Im a Christian, husband of one, father of two, university lecturer, Baptist lay-preacher and Christian Education director. I tried, I really did, but nothing came. My goal was for a kid to finish the last page of The Wingfeather Saga, and to know in a way that they didnt know before that there is something stronger than the darkness. That was when Derek was doing Mockingbird, and those kind of things, and I remember tracking with it at the time. As you and I know, precious jewels or jewelry are a precursor to adventure. But thats not my experience as a parent. Read Tony Reinkes book, Lit! Many Christians are suspicious of fantasy literature despite the progenitors of modern fantasy genre, J.R.R. "I love you." Andrew Peterson: If I compare that to that scene in Return of the Jedi when the Emperor and Luke are having their final showdown, and Luke is looking out the window and he sees the battle happening a long way away, and you know that Han Solo and Lando and theyre all fighting, and you love these characters. If you have not read the whole series, you may want to save this until you have finished it. And so Janner runs away with his brother Tink, the one who doesnt think, and his sister Leeli and her dog, and their mother, Nia and their grandfather, Podo. When we come home from the library, each of them has five or ten books under each arm. I just finished reading wolf king again. The scariest sound in the Wingfeather series is Moo. Im thinking about things like the flash of anger that Janner has in the rockroach den, or the scenes in the coffin in the Fork Factory, or the way you talk about Kalmars fear on the Phoob Islands. Peterson, the award-winning author-songwriter and I have one thing in common: we both grew up reading Dragonlances outsider Tanis Half-Elven, Forgotten Realms loner Drizzt Dourden, Belgariads orphaned Garion and many more tales of lonely boys in fantasy adventures. Jake Meador: It doesnt get better. And so the characters in the story cant see a good end to their story, and then you as the reader are in the same boat, because youre reading it and going, How in the world is this going to work out?. Jolkien. And in a world that were living in now, with COVID, and riots, and everything else, I sometimes cannot see a good way for this to end. I found a wing-ibbythread! Andrew Peterson: We call it The Warren. Andrew Peterson: It was just a spaceship flying around, with these cardboard characters in them. Its funny to me, but I get emails and comments from people that are like, Hey, so Im just curious, you have a barber in the town named J. Bird, is that a Jayber Crow reference? But I would say Harry Potter was another thing that kind of kick-started it, because those books were coming out as I was working on the Wingfeather books, and at the time, if you were a Harry Potter fan, you had this deep suspicion (that was really a deep hope) that she was going where it felt like she was going with the story, which was really a Christian story, whether or not shes a Christian herself. They both had classical training, and could probably read The Iliad in its original language. Loyalty? Sacrifice? That ending scene stands as the first time I cried while reading. After helping free Janner, she was put in the coffin again. I think in a pre-social media age, a pre-television age, peoples attention spans were longer than ours are now, so their reading of scripture was probably a lot richer, even if they didnt believe it. He might give Wingfeather a try. Theres a lot of well silliness, especially in the early parts the sort of stuff that makes little boys cackle (which worked out, as all I had were little boys). If divinity is mentioned, the gods are more like Greek, Roman, Norse, or Egyptian gods: Gods who worship their stomachs. Andrew Peterson: Well, I think I could say this: I grew up watching the original Star Wars trilogy, and loving it. You also take time to develop it with Bonifer Squoon, who just kind of swings all over the place; first hes this character thats just kind of a trivia item that we come across early on, and then hes this kind of welcome connection to Esben and to Anniera, and then he turns into a villain very abruptly, and then in the end hes not redeemed in any way, but his story is told in a way that makes sense so that you can understand how Bonifer became what he finally turned out to be. Janner had to be the one. The Peterson Principle of Fantasy Storytelling is it should make this world brighter, not duller and our eyes clearer, not dimmer. So, anyway, I think that back then, the idea of receiving a new name from Christ was part of what was at the root of that idea that Tink was the metaphor that was playing out was that Tink was afraid of being a king, he didnt want to be, so the name became a very tangible way to convey that idea. If hes got matches, does that mean there are cannons in this world? And so I had to figure out what kind of world it was, so that it felt to the kids like they were dealing with a real place, with real human beings, who they could know and love. Notice that Leeli is 8 and Janner is 12 which coincidentally is the reading age of this book, 8-12 years old. But its really bad if youre susceptible to voices, the voice of the enemy. But other than that, yes!!!!!!!!! The most important take away from Reinkes book is we need a Christian worldview to know what to read and not to read, and to flourish from our reading. Theyre accompanied by Leelis dog Nugget, their mother Nia, and their ex-pirate grandfather Podo Helmer. Often the parents and the grownups in general are oblivious. So Leeli loves dogs. Which I think a lot of moralistic Christian literature does sometimes. But he cant. Thanks! I mean, he has to. Janner Wingfeather's father was the High King of Anniera. I hear it to this day. I must be an annoyance to them, and blah blah. And if they dont do any of that, there is a greater not-so-obvious prize. And now Im not sure how to ask the question since youve already touched on some of these things. Also, may I just say that Andrew Petersons music is better than Wingfeather, go ahead, disagree, but its just my thought. Peterson describes his story as epic like Lord of the Rings, witty like the Princess Bride and truth-telling like the Chronicles of Narnia. More on that later. Andrew Peterson: I mostly hated it. Tolkien started with a map, so I took a cue from him, and thats how I startedwith sketching the map of the world of Aerwiar, and then filling in the towns and the rivers and so on. It's set in the world of Aerwiar where Gnag the Nameless and his evil Fangs have taken over.
